A remarkable Australian player who has two World Cup titles to his name has decided to retire from one-day international cricket. At 36, Maxwell will remain within the T20 team as they aim for the World Cup in India and Sri Lanka in 2024.
Maxwell’s ODI career has been superb; since playing his first game in 2012 against Afghanistan, he has participated in 149 matches. He scored 3,990 runs with an average of 33.81 and an incredibly high strike rate of 126.70, which is among the best in ODI history. He had four hundreds, one being a double-century, 201 not out against Afghanistan in the 2023 World Cup, which is considered one of the great innings of all time.
Apart from his batting, he also took 77 wickets with his off-spin; in his prime, he was arguably the best fielder. Injuries since then have forced him to concentrate more on T20s. He has also expressed in an interview that he felt the body wasn’t holding up anymore and that it was time to allow the young ones to take over moving forward.

Mentioning the importance of future planning concerning tournaments, Maxwell did not see himself holding on to a spot for selfish reasons. Todd Greenberg, of Cricket Australia, stated that Maxwell was one of the most exciting players in ODI cricket, while George Bailey added that Maxwell is one of those players who has contributed to the game through his talent, interventions, and devotion.
