Hardik Pandya, the skipper of the Mumbai Indians, recently praised the team’s scouting crew for being great at spotting talent after young left-arm pacer Ashwani Kumar had an impressive debut. With an outstanding performance where he took four wickets, Ashwani helped propel MI to an 8-wicket victory over KKR at the Wankhede Stadium on Monday.
Notably, Kumar made history as the first Indian player to grab four wickets on his IPL debut, contributing significantly to restricting KKR to a mere 116 runs in just 16.2 overs. His figures of 4 for 24 showcased the power of MI’s bowling lineup, leading to a straightforward win, with Ryan Rickleton finishing the game off strongly, scoring an unbeaten 62 runs.
Pandya expressed how satisfying the win was, particularly because it was at home. He mentioned the contribution from all players, saying, “We did it as a group. Everyone made a contribution, and I couldn’t be happier. It’s always tough to choose the standout player. With our squad, we’re pretty sure about who we’re supporting.”
He recognized that Ashwani had the right kind of skills for the match, pointing out how the pitch offered some advantages, making him the ideal pick. “All the scouts for MI really go everywhere and find these young talents, Pandya mentioned after the match, emphasizing the team’s strong scouting efforts.
During a practice game, he noticed Ashwani’s talent, remarking on his speed and ability to swing the ball late. The unique action of this left-arm bowler definitely caught the attention of the coaching staff. Pandya particularly admired Kumar’s crucial wicket of Andre Russell and how he started the game with a fantastic catch of Quinton De Kock, something rare for a fast bowler.
As for the batting, MI had no trouble chasing down KKcR’s total, with Rickleton setting the pace for the innings. Despite Varun Chakravarthy trying to hold back MI’s scoring rate, Rickleton found his rhythm, taking charge against every bowler he faced and reaching his first IPL fifty. Suryakumar Yadav also made a quick impact by scoring 27 runs from just 9 balls and finishing the game emphatically with a massive six off Russell.
This victory pushed MI up to sixth place in the IPL standings, while KKR found themselves sinking to the bottom of the table. It was a day filled with good performances and solid teamwork that promised a bright path forward for the Mumbai Indians this season.
