Harry Brook, who is known for his amazing skills as a middle-order batter, was announced on Monday, April 7, as the new captain of England’s white-ball teams. The 26-year-old takes over the role from Jos Buttler, who stepped down last month after England’s disappointing exit from the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 at the group stage.
Since his international debut in Barbados against the West Indies on January 26, 2022, Brook has made a mark in both One Day Internationals (ODIs) and Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is). So far, he has played 26 ODIs and 44 T20Is. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) shared in a statement that Brook has been a vital player for the team since he started, and he’s considered one of the most talented batters in England across all formats. He’s even ranked number two in Test cricket right now!

Last year, Brook served as the vice-captain for both the ODIs and T20Is. He had the chance to lead the team during the Metro Bank ODI series against Australia last September when Buttler was unavailable, and he received a lot of praise for his smart decisions and calm approach under pressure. Plus, Brook has experience from his time as captain of the Young Lions and even led England in the 2018 ICC Under-19 World Cup in New Zealand.
Since he began playing for the national team, Brook has scored 816 runs in ODIs, boasting an average of 34.00, with his highest score being an impressive 110. In T20Is, he has a highest score of 81 and was also a part of the squad that clinched the ICC T20 World Cup title in 2022.
In his own words, Brook expressed his excitement: “It’s a real honour to be named England’s white-ball captain. Ever since I was a kid playing cricket at Burley in Wharfedale, I dreamed of representing Yorkshire, playing for England, and maybe one day leading the team. To now be given that chance means a great deal to me.” He took a moment to thank his family and coaches for their unwavering support, saying, “Their belief in me has made all the difference, and I wouldn’t be in this position without them.”
Looking ahead, Brook is eager to get started and mentioned the immense talent in England. He’s focused on moving the team forward and is determined to win series and major competitions, stating, “I’m excited to get going and give it everything I’ve got.”
Rob Key, the Managing Director of England Men’s Cricket, expressed his delight at Brook stepping into the captaincy. He noted that Brook has long been part of the team’s future plans, although this opportunity presented itself a bit sooner than expected. Key praised Brook not only for being a remarkable cricketer but also for having a sharp cricketing mind and a clear vision that will help the team succeed in achieving its goals.
Brook’s first series as the full-time captain will be during England’s home series against the West Indies, featuring three ODIs and three T20Is, which will kick off at the end of May.
