3. Bob Simpson: 311 – Old Trafford 1964
Bob Simpson made a great contribution and left a legacy in Australian cricket as a captain and coach. His batting performance was also impressive as he formed one of the finest Test opening partnerships with Bill Lawry. He took Australia to a 1-0 victory in the 1964 Ashes series in England and showcased his batting technique in the fourth Test match of the series.
Simpson and Lawry scored 201 runs in the first wicket partnership. After the dismissal of Lawry who made a century, Simpson continued batting and was building partnerships with all the middle-order batters before finally getting out for 311. Barrington also excelled in this match with his career-best 256 as England replied with a giant score.
2. Don Bradman: 334 – Headingley 1930
On day one of the Leeds Test match, 1930, Don Bradman had an unbelievable performance by scoring 309 runs. This was later beaten by Len Hutton. He reached his century first before lunch, then another hundred thousand between lunchtime and tea, and one more hundred thousand after tea.

It was a huge contribution in a record-breaking Test match for England. After the opener’s great 364, England declared at 903 for 7, which was at that time the highest Test score ever and also a new record.
Maurice Leyland and Joe Hardstaff spanned the entire century, but the spotlight shone on Hutton, who occupied the wicket for more than 13 hours during his innings. Australia, with their captain Don Bradman absent in both innings, still managed to lose by a whopping 579 runs.
