With the Test series in England just around the corner, the selection committee of the BCCI announced the Indian team. Shubman Gill is taking over as captain, succeeding Rohit Sharma, who retired from Test cricket earlier this year. The team is going through a major transition with Virat Kohli also stepping away from the format and Ravichandran Ashwin retiring from the international scene.
The BCCI has released the full squad of 17 members for the England tour. Gill was said to be the frontrunner for the captaincy, competing alongside Jasprit Bumrah and Rishabh Pant; they selected him to lead the team during this crucial transition phase. Selection committee chairman Ajit Agarkar has, therefore, announced Gill’s captaincy and revealed the squad for the five-match series beginning next month.
Though the squad will miss the likes of Rohit and Kohli, it has some familiar faces. Conversely, the senior bowler Mohammed Shami and batsman Sarfaraz Khan will not be present this time; to cheers all around, however, Karun Nair returns to the squad after performing creditably in the Ranji Trophy 2024-25.
For the England tour, here is the squad:
Shubman Gill (C), Rishabh Pant (WK/VC), Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Sai Sudharsan, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Karun Nair, Nitish Reddy, Ravindra Jadeja, Dhruv Jurel (WK), Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav.
