India’s bowling coach Morne Morkel thinks the English pitches will be less spicy than what they’ve seen before. He’s pointed out one key thing that players need to keep in mind to succeed on this tough tour. Since arriving, the Indian team has been working hard in practice and having some fun. Morkel, who has plenty of experience playing in England, has been keeping an eye on the ball and bat.
After a couple of days of practice, Morkel felt the conditions were good for the fast bowlers, tough for the batters but good for their growth.
“The first couple of days have been great for the quicks. It builds their confidence and challenges the batters which helps them prepare for what’s ahead, he said in a BCCI video. He also said he doesn’t expect the wickets to be as lively as they’ve been lately. There’s been a lot of good banter between bat and ball, probably because the pitches are a bit lively, he added.
As the team prepares for the Tests starting June 20 at Headingley, Morkel wants his pace bowlers to keep talking even when the conditions aren’t as favorable. He believes that’s when their true character will show. “When the pitches are flat, bowlers often hold back. I’ll be telling them to keep talking and pushing each other even when it gets tough,” he said.

Every day brings India closer to starting a new chapter in Test cricket, especially with them playing without stars like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli who retired from this format last month. Despite having a less experienced team, Morkel said consistency is key to success in England.
“We’re just focusing on building up to the first Test. For me, consistency is everything. That means consistent practice and finding what works for each player individually. We have a varied attack with different skill sets,” he said.

“We’re happy with how things are going so far. I was worried about our lack of red-ball matches but watching the guys train over the last few days has been encouraging. We’ve got a good group and we need to approach this Test series with confidence and team spirit, he concluded.
