The monsoon is hitting early, and it’s already causing some games to get washed out. So, the IPL 2025 has smartly decided to add two extra hours as a buffer for each of the nine remaining league matches. It’s not just for the playoffs anymore; even the group stage gets this rain-time cushion now. After a week-long break due to some cross-border issues, the IPL doesn’t want any more interruptions, especially with playoff spots still up for grabs.
Out of the nine matches left, eight are in the evening with just one day match: GT vs CSK on May 25. Normally, evening games wrap up by 10:50 PM IST, but with the new changes, they can go on until 11:56 PM if necessary. For afternoon games, they can last until 7:56 PM. So, even if it rains, there’s a good chance to get a full 20 overs or at least enough to make it count.
The IPL had to do something, especially since three matches have already been scrapped because of the rain: PBKS vs KKR in Kolkata, SRH vs DC in Hyderabad, and the crucial one: RCB vs KKR in Bengaluru, which didn’t see any play at all. Also, PBKS managed to win against RCB in a rain-shortened match, while GT had a mixed game against MI.

As for the RCB vs SRH clash on May 23, it’s been moved to Lucknow. The weather department has warned of heavy rain in Bengaluru this week, and the BCCI didn’t want to take any chances. It’s a tough break for RCB fans, especially with the playoffs coming up. But given the situation in the city, this was probably the right call.
