The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is all set to announce a replacement for Jay Shah as the BCCI Secretary at its Special General Meeting (SGM) in Mumbai on January 12, 2025. This crucial meeting will also elect a new treasurer to fill the vacant positions, which have remained unoccupied since Shah and Ashish Shelar’s resignations in November 2024.
Why Are These Elections Taking Place?
Jay Shah, who had been serving as the Secretary of the BCCI since 2019, vacated his post in December 2024 after being appointed as the Chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC). Under the Lodha Committee reforms, it is not permissible for a person to hold two positions simultaneously in the BCCI. Consequently, Shah resigned from his position at BCCI to take on his new role at the ICC. This left a significant gap in the administration of Indian cricket.
Similarly, Ashish Shelar, who served as the treasurer, also stepped down after his appointment as a Cabinet Minister in the Maharashtra government.
