Stuart MacGill, who used to be a spinner for the Australian cricket team, got caught up in some serious drug stuff. On Thursday, the court said he was guilty of being involved in a cocaine deal, but they didn’t think he was part of any big-time drug ring.
Basically, a jury in Sydney decided that MacGill, who’s 54, wasn’t the one who set up this deal to sell a kilogram of cocaine. That’s a lot of coke, worth about AUD 330,000, and it all went down back in April 2021.
Even though he was cleared of that big charge, they did find him guilty of just being involved in supplying drugs at all. MacGill played in 44 Test matches for Australia, the reports say that he didn’t really react when they read out the verdict. It sounds like he was trying to keep a straight face.
Now, they’re going to figure out what his punishment will be, but that won’t happen for another eight weeks. So, MacGill has to wait and see what’s going to happen to him.
What happened was is, MacGill introduced his regular guy to get drugs to his brother-in-law, Marino Sotiropoulos. They all met under MacGill’s restaurant, which is up on Sydney’s north shore.
MacGill said he didn’t know anything about the actual drug deal. The lawyers said that the deal wouldn’t have happened if MacGill hadn’t been involved and made the connection. It looks like the jury kind of agreed with them on that point.
