Joe Root played in the second ODI against the West Indies on Sunday, June 1. The 34-year-old from Yorkshire faces 139 balls and scores a career-best 166. This served as a support to chase a target of 309 runs in 48.5 overs in a 3-wicket victory.
With the innings, he became the first English player to score 7000 runs in ODIs. Root chased 84 runs to reach 7000 and got that milestone with a boundary off the fourth ball of the 33rd over. Prior, he had surpassed Eoin Morgan’s tally of 6957 runs to become England’s top run-scorer for ODIs since the 2019 World Cup.
Here is a list of most runs for England in ODIs:
Player | Runs |
---|---|
Joe Root | 7082 |
Eoin Morgan | 6957 |
Ian Bell | 5416 |
Jos Buttler | 5233 |
Paul Collingwood | 5092 |
Root came into bat at No. 3 in Cardiff, putting on 85 with Harry Brook, who scored 47 off 36 balls, and 143 with Will Jacks, who made 49 off 58 balls.
Root also holds the position as England’s all-time highest run-scorer in Tests, having become the first English player to score 13,000 runs in Test cricket last month. He will be a vital cog for Ben Stokes in the impending five-match Test series against India, with the first Test at Headingley, Leeds, from June 20 to 24, followed by Tests in Birmingham, Lord’s, Manchester, and The Oval.
