Jos Buttler, former England captain, shared a moment he had with Virat Kohli where Kohli opened up about his insecurities and times when he felt unsure about his game. Buttler said this conversation helped him deal with his own expectations during IPL 2023.
Last year, Buttler had a great season, being the highest run-scorer with 863 runs, but in 2023, he struggled a bit for Rajasthan Royals. When he got a chance to practice with Royal Challengers Bengaluru, he decided to reach out to Kohli, who had a great season in 2016 with 973 runs.
In the ‘For the Love of Cricket’ podcast with Stuart Broad, Buttler said that while facing Kohli many times, he thought it would be good to ask him a few questions about handling expectations. He said Kohli carries a lot of pressure as a player. Buttler appreciated Kohli’s willingness to share his thoughts and advice, saying Kohli told him to accept that not every season can be the same and it’s okay to have ups and downs.
Buttler said he didn’t have to push Kohli to open up. They talked about the insecurities even the best players face. Buttler felt grateful for Kohli’s insights and realized that even top players sometimes pick up their bat and feel unsure about their skills. It made him realize that it’s normal to feel that way too.
