Keshav Maharaj, South Africa’s left-arm spinner, praised opener Aiden Markram after he scored a century in the World Test Championship Final against Australia at Lord’s on Friday.
Markram made history by becoming the first South African to score a hundred in an ICC tournament final, finishing on 102 off 159 balls. He’s also the fourth South African to score a century in an ICC knockout match, joining the likes of Jacques Kallis and Herschelle Gibbs.
After Day 3 of the match, Maharaj said of Markram: “I could see he was focused when he came off the field before batting. He wanted to fix the mistake from the first innings.” Maharaj said Markram is great under pressure, “Big players step up when it matters and correct their mistakes fast. There’s no better place for him to score a hundred than at Lord’s in a final against a top team.”

Maharaj also praised captain Temba Bavuma, who scored 65 despite being hampered by a hamstring issue. He said Bavuma’s toughness played a huge part in their 143 run partnership.
“Despite his injury, Temba was right there with Aiden and it was great to see how they worked together, knowing Temba couldn’t run at full speed,” Maharaj added.
