Lungi Ngidi, the South African speedster, equalled Dale Steyn’s record for most wickets for South Africa in T20Is after a good show against Zimbabwe on Monday.
Ngidi got lucky with the record-tying wicket. Wessly Madheve was trying to figure out the best angle for his shot and moved too far back in his crease. His back foot hit the stumps and he was out for 1(9).
Ngidi didn’t give away many runs, finishing with 1/15 in four overs. He now has 64 wickets for South Africa in T20Is, equal Steyn’s third most. Steyn got there in 47 matches, Ngidi in 44.
Tabraiz Shamsi, the left-arm wrist spinner, is top with 89 wickets in 70 matches. Kagiso Rabada is second with 71 in 65 games.
Zimbabwe struggled but Sikandar Raza played well, scoring 54 not out from 38 balls. Ryan Burl helped with 29(20) and they added 66 runs. They played cautiously but also attacked and Zimbabwe reached 141/6.

In response, Richard Ngarava got Lhuan-dre Pretorious to hit the ball back to him and got him out for a duck. Reeza Hendricks (11) and captain Rassie van der Dussen (16) were also out quickly and South Africa were 38/3 after the powerplay.
South Africa needed a partnership and Rubin Hermann and Dewald Brevis delivered. Hermann was calm and Brevis was aggressive, hitting three sixes in a row off Ryan Burl. Brevis was then out for 41(17). Ngarava then got Hermann out for 45(37).
By then the two had done enough. Corbin Bosch and George Linde finished the job and South Africa won by five wickets with four overs left.
