Matthew Hayden, the former Australian cricketer and Chennai Super Kings player, recently shared his thoughts on the pitch at Chepauk, saying it looked like a great place for batting. He also had some strong opinions about how MS Dhoni approached the powerplay during their recent game.
In a tough match, the Kolkata Knight Riders really dominated Chennai, winning by eight wickets right in front of their own fans. Hayden pointed out that if Chennai wants to have a fighting chance, they need to play more aggressively and take the lead rather than trying to catch up late in the game. “I honestly believed this pitch could have suited a score of over 180,” he said during a discussion on JioHotstar. “It seemed like a solid pitch, with its hard black soil. When MS Dhoni talked about playing conservatively in the powerplay, I found myself disagreeing with him.” He noted that Dhoni’s answers to Simon Katich’s questions revealed a mindset focused on being careful, but Hayden thinks that’s not the right way to go.
He continued to explain that if Chennai sticks to being cautious, players like Shivam Dube and Dhoni himself end up facing tons of pressure as they try to recover from a slow start. “They have some talented players on their side, but if they keep playing it safe, it limits the effectiveness of guys like Dube and puts extra stress on Dhoni,” Hayden said.

After the game, Dhoni, who looked quite disappointed, put the blame on his batters for the crushing defeat against Kolkata. He advised his team to shake off the desperation and focus more on applying themselves properly in future matches of the Indian Premier League. Chennai struggled to make much of an impact, scoring only 103 runs before Kolkata chased it down in just 11 overs. This loss marked the largest margin for CSK in IPL history based on how many deliveries were left.
Dhoni reflected on the recent streak of losses, saying, “We’ve had a tough time lately, and it hasn’t gone our way. We can’t shy away from that challenge; we need to confront it head-on. Today, I felt like we just didn’t put enough runs on the board.” His frustration was evident as he called for better execution in the games to come.
