On Monday, February 10th, Matthew Breetzke, a 26-year-old right-handed wicketkeeper-batter from South Africa, became the first and only cricketer in the world to score 150 on ODI debut. Opening for the Proteas in the ongoing Tri-Nation ODI Series 2020 against New Zealand in Pakistan, Breetzke scored 150 runs off 148 balls in Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore, with the help of 11 fours and five sixes.
The record for the most runs on ODI debut before Breetzke had been held by former West Indies opening batter Desmond Haynes, who put up a score of 148 runs in his ODI debut for the Men in Maroon against Australia in St. John’s on February 22, 1978. The score comprised 16 fours and 2 sixes.

Breetzke is the fourth South African, and the 20th overall, to make an ODI century on debut. The first of the lot to achieve this is Colin Ingram, who scored 124 runs from 126 balls as South Africa played Zimbabwe in Bloemfontein, October 15, 2010. South African ODI captain Temba Bavuma hit 113 runs from 123 balls during his 50 over game against Ireland in Benoni on 25 September 2016. Reeza Hendricks scored a run total of 102 runs off 89 balls against Sri Lanka in Pallekele on August 5, 2018.

Thanks to Breetzke’s memorable innings on ODI debut, South Africa scored a total of 304 runs losing only six wickets against New Zealand. Other than this 26-year-old cricketer from Gqeberha, Wiaan Mulder accounted towards the South African total with 61 runs today. Together, the two also forged a partnership of 131 runs for the fourth wicket.
After New Zealand claimed a 78-run victory over Pakistan in their first match in the Tri-Nation series on Saturday at Gaddafi Stadium, pace bowlers Matt Henry and William O’Rourke both got two wickets, while Michael Bracewell sent one South African batter back for 43 runs in his quota of 10 overs.
New Zealand will seal their fate in the final match of the Tri-Nation ODI series once they successfully chase a target of 305 runs set in Lahore.
