Michael Atherton, the former England cricketer, has given his verdict on the recent Test series between England and India. He doesn’t think it was as good as the 2005 Ashes. Many consider that Ashes series to be one of the best and most competitive Test series ever, with England winning 2-1.
The series started with a bang. Rishabh Pant, India’s Test vice-captain, scored centuries in both innings of the first Test but it wasn’t enough as England chased down a big total. India came back strongly at Edgbaston.
Looking back the series had everything a cricket fan could want. Intensity, great skill, drama and it kept everyone on the edge of their seats. Shubman Gill who was captain for the first time in this format had a brilliant series scoring 754 runs. He led a young Indian team to a 2-2 draw in England which is a good result.
After the final Test at the Oval many fans called it the best series in recent times. A lot of former cricketers thought both teams played with great skill and courage throughout the five Tests.
Nasser Hussain, another former England captain asked Atherton if he thought this series was the best or even better than the 2005 Ashes. Atherton didn’t think it was better but he did think it was close.

Atherton said on Sky Sports Cricket that the 2005 Ashes was something special, a team that was getting older and a new team coming up, full of top players at their best. He said while the 2023 Ashes series was fantastic this India-England series was the best since 2005 because of the drama, Woakes’ innings and Rishabh Pant’s batting and all the ups and downs that happened.
Going back to the 2005 Ashes, England won 2-1 and Australia fell short and failed to get a draw in the final Test at the Oval.
Atherton and Hussain were both commentators for India’s tour of England.
