Mitchell Owen, with the fastest century in the Big Bash League history showing his brutal power and wide range of shots as Hobart Hurricanes very nearly managed to chase down the target set by the Sydney Thunder in the BBL 14 finale.
Mitchell Owen’s onslaught of 108 off 42 ensured that he stood shoulder-to-shoulder with Craig Simmons-a century off 39 balls in 2014- this joining them on the elite list would leave fans and rivals aghast at his feral hitting.
Owen’s performance surpassed Luke Wright’s 44-ball century and Glenn Maxwell’s 41-ball effort, changing the historic accounts of the league. With a strike rate of 263.41, he has set what is truly an unreachable benchmark in the 13-year history of this tournament, demonstrating just how brilliantly he surpassed other T20 greats.

In disarray against an almighty Thunder force, Owen wreaked havoc right on, plundering 31 runs in Nathan McAndrew’s two overs while scoring 22 off Wes Agar’s sole spell. He lost partners in Caleb Jewell (13 off 12) and Nikhil Chaudhary (1) while being the one to steer the chase all by himself to a century in the tenth over. When he struck his 11 sixes, with many landing into the stands, it left the Thunder bowlers all but helpless, with Owen bringing the chase closer for the rest of the batters to finish.

His assault was finally stopped in the 11th over as he was dismissed by Tom Andrews.
Earlier, Sydney Thunder scored 182 for 7, on the back of Jason Sangha’s 67 and David Warner’s 48, put on a partnership of 97 for the first wicket. But the middle order melted under Nathan Ellis, three for 23, and Riley Meredith, three for 27, for late solace all made by Oliver Davies, who made 26 off 19.
As a total, that was, of course, woefully under par, with Owen’s historic assault outdoing the Thunder’s effort to establish Hobart’s supremacy in what is bound to be remembered for Owen’s unprecedented brilliance.
