Former Pakistani speedster Mohammad Amir has expressed an interest in some opportunity pertaining to playing in the Indian Premier League. The left-arm fast said that he is reticent about his retirement from international cricket-the second time last year-it would also 2026 and would love to use it as an opportunity if it comes his way.
“Next year tak meri opportunity ban rahi hai, agar hua to why not (Next year, an opportunity of mine will arise; if it happens, why not). I will play in the IPL,” Amir said on the Haarna Mana Hai show.
Pakistani players took part in the first edition of the IPL 2008, but after that, they were banned because of wobbly political relations between India and Pakistan. Former Pakistani all-rounder Azhar Mahmood though was rightly playing in IPL through Punjab Kings in 2012 and 2013 and for KKR in IPL 2015 due to his citizenship in the United Kingdom.
Amir’s wife, Narjis, has a UK citizenship; he, too has high hopes of getting a UK passport soon to open the doors of his entry to play within the IPL.
During the same show, Amir was asked of what team would he feature if permitted to play in the IPL. In return, he would mention the Royal Challengers Bengaluru in his answer.
Out-of-favor Pakistani batter Ahmad Shahzad, part of the panellists, said RCB need someone like Amir and that Amir could help them win their first IPL title.
32-year-old Amir made his debut back in 2009 on the 7th of June during a T20I against England at the Oval, then went on to play 36 Tests, 61 ODIs, and 62 T20Is for Men in Blue. He was part of the Pakistani team that got a crown for the T20 World Cup in 2009 under Younis Khan and the Champions Trophy title in 2017 under Sarfaraz Ahmed’s captaincy.
His last outing for the Pakistani side was in a T20 World Cup match on June 16, 2024, in Lauderhill against Ireland.
