Joe Root is England’s most successful test captain. He captained England in 64 tests from 2017 to 2022. England won 27, lost 26 and drew 11 under him. Root stepped down as test captain in April 2022.
2. Michael Vaughan – 26
Next is Michael Vaughan who captained England in 51 tests. They won 26, lost 11 and drew 14. He was test captain from 2003 to 2008.
3. Alastair Cook – 24
Alastair Cook, a former England opener, captained England in 59 tests. They had 24 wins, 22 losses and 13 draws. He played 161 tests and was England’s highest run-scorer until Joe Root surpassed him.

4. Andrew Strauss – 24
Andrew Strauss, another former England player, took England to 24 test wins. He captained 50 tests from 2006 to 2012. England lost 11 and drew 15 under him. Strauss played 100 tests for England.

Ben Stokes is fifth on the list. He has captained England in 36 tests so far with 22 wins, 13 losses and one draw. Stokes became England’s full-time test captain in 2022.
