Over the last 5 years Joe Root has become a force to be reckoned with in Test cricket. He’s gone from a good batsman to a consistent run scorer in all conditions. Now people are asking if he’s better than Virat Kohli who many consider the best across all formats. Kohli’s former RCB teammate Murali Kartik shared his thoughts on the matter.
Kartik says Kohli is the king of all formats but Root is the master of Test cricket.
Root’s recent Test performance has led to comparisons with Kohli. His consistency and desire to score runs in any situation has put him in a league of his own.
Root’s 38th Test century in the Manchester Test against India showed his class and consistency. He remained calm under pressure and played fluently, showed his red ball expertise.
In a review on Cricbuzz, commentator Murali Karthik praised Joe Root as the best Test cricketer today. He cited Root’s consistency, hunger and ability to score runs anywhere as reasons for his top ranking.

Kartik said while Virat Kohli is the top name in all formats, Joe Root is the best in Test cricket in this decade, scoring well in any condition.
Root’s stats from last 5 years support this. Since the restart after COVID in 2020, he has scored the most runs in Test cricket, 5,810 runs at 55.33, 21 centuries. No one has scored 4,000 runs or 10 centuries in that time.
In the Manchester Test, Root surpassed Australian legend Ricky Ponting to become the second-highest run-scorer in Test history. Now with 13,409 Test runs, he is behind Sachin Tendulkar’s record of 15,921 runs, needs just over 2,500 more to break it.
