Recently, reports confirmed that Shubman Gill is most likely to lead India for the upcoming ODI series against Australia. Earlier, PTI reported that Gill may be rested for the series; however, a fresh report from the Express Sports claimed the Punjab batter is in frame for ODI captaincy.
The two great players, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, are being picked for the Indian squad for the Australia ODIs, says Express Sports. But when it came to the selectors having a word with the Test skipper Shubman Gill, who may be involved in his first ODI captaincy during the Australia tour.
The report stated that Gill was part of the discussion that pertained to the Indian team selection for the Australia tour. While Rohit Sharma remains the active ODI player, the appointment of Gill is expected to speed up the leadership transition process before the 2027 World Cup, wherein he is intended to captain the Indian contingent. So swift have things been moving that one wouldn’t be surprised if what’s left of Rohit Sharma is merely a memory after the Australia ODIs.

At last, one cannot help but regard Rohit Sharma as the greatest batter to ever represent India in cricket. He had an ugly Border-Gavaskar in Australia, and ended up realizing that he was no longer playing well in the longer format and hence decided to quit from it. Finally, he led India to glory in the 2024 T20 World Cup, with the winning of the Champions Trophy too falling in his tenure.
However, with Rohit having turned 38 and a little shy of attaining the big 40 by the next World Cup, the Indian team management does not reckon persisting with him until the mega event. A few aspects remain unclear, but when the BCCI reveals its squad, the definitive answer toward Rohit’s future as an Indian cricketer shall be unveiled.
