It’s tough being Prithvi Shaw. He was once called the next Sachin Tendulkar but everyone knows his career hasn’t gone as planned. He won the Under-19 World Cup and scored a century in his first India match but things went south. At 25 making a comeback to the Indian team is a long shot given he last played internationally in July 2021.
It’s been over four years since Shaw played for India and things got worse when Mumbai, his longtime team, dropped him for disciplinary reasons. Now with Maharashtra Shaw is determined to turn things around. He’s playing well in the Buchi Babu tournament showing the form that got him noticed with scores of 111 against Chhattisgarh and 66 against the TNCA President XI.
He still has a way to go but he’s off to a start that has impressed Maharashtra’s chief selector Akshay Darekar. Prithvi is on track. His batting was never the problem. He’s focused and wants to impress with his bat. He’s also serious about his fitness and is doing his training regularly, Darekar said.

Darekar who used to play for India A and Maharashtra pointed out that Shaw’s issues were off the field. His fitness decline hurt his batting and his ability to play long innings. Shaw has said he’ll get back to his 2018 form raising hopes for a comeback. Ajit Agarkar the BCCI chairman of selectors watches performers closely and if Shaw can get his attention he might return to the India team.
Things were okay for Shaw until 2023 when he played some good innings for Northamptonshire in the Royal London One-Day Cup. Later that year his career slumped with fitness and discipline problems. Shaw wasn’t even picked in the IPL 2024 auction capping off a bad year and a half for the talented player. But a fresh start with Maharashtra is keeping Shaw positive and Darekar thinks a turnaround is coming.
He likes to play aggressively and take charge. He played that way in his first two matches for Maharashtra in the Buchi Babu Tournament. His quality was clear in both innings. He wants to score big.
His goal is to help Maharashtra reach the Ranji knockouts with his performances, he added. The more he plays the better for us and for himself as well as he can achieve his targets. He knows this is a big season for him and he wants to make it count.
