Prithvi Shaw, the mercurial opener, is now officially part of the Maharashtra team for the next season. He thinks this will help him grow as a player.
The 25-year-old is leaving his hometown of Mumbai where he has played his entire career. This comes after a period of poor form and some reported issues with his fitness and conduct.
Shaw released a statement saying, “Thank you MCA but I need a fresh start. Right now I have a chance to play professional cricket under another State Association. I think this will help me grow and get better as a player.”
He added, “I am very thankful to MCA for all the opportunities and support they have given me over the years. Maharashtra Cricket Association has worked hard in past years to improve cricket infrastructure across the state.
Shaw is a talented player who scored a century in his first Test match for India in 2018. Now he is trying to get his career back on track after it stalled recently. He was dropped from the Mumbai team last season and was not bought in the 2025 IPL auction.

MCA said in a statement that they have given Shaw the No Objection Certificate (NOC) for the move. “Prithvi Shaw is very talented and has done a lot for Mumbai cricket. We appreciate his decision and wish him all the best for the future, said MCA secretary Abhay Hadap.
In Maharashtra, Shaw will join a team that has Ruturaj Gaikwad who now plays for India. Fans of the state are excited about the possibility of these two strong openers batting together.
Shaw’s exit from Mumbai has been a long time coming. His on field performance has been overshadowed by his off field issues. Shreyas Iyer, former Mumbai captain, had said that Shaw needed to work on his work ethic.
Moving away from the glare of Mumbai cricket might be what Shaw needs to find the form that made him one of India’s most talented young players.
