Punjab Kings have had an excellent IPL season so far, but with all sincerity, Ponting believes there is still plenty of mileage left to run. Qualifying for the playoffs for the first time in over ten years is only halfway towards reaching his ambition. His team, Punjabi Kings, after beating Mumbai Indians by 7 wickets recently, has qualified for the top two in the playoffs, giving a better opportunity of reaching finals.
“I’m excited about the talent in the group,” shared Ponting in an exclusive interview with JioHotstar. “Yeah, it’s great so far, but we haven’t really accomplished anything yet. I’ve told the players right from when we qualified; my goal was to finish in the top two, and we have done that. We’re all in a good place, enjoying each other’s company, but we still have another week ahead.”

He also showered praise on skipper Shreyas Iyer. The last time they worked together was way back during his days at Delhi Capitals, going all the way to the Final. “I was keen to link up with him again, and that was demonstrated by how keen I was to invest in him in the auction.”
He feels players such as Iyer are important in maintaining a good atmosphere within the team. “I’ve known him for a long time, and he’s a good person. Having quality people when you’re trying to build a culture is really worth it,” he said. “If you were to ask any player, they would tell you what an amazing guy Shreyas is. He is able to motivate all of them-he encourages them and challenges them when required, and that’s what makes him such a great leader.”
