Rishabh Pant, the vice-captain of the Indian Test team, said he knew Akash Deep’s sister is undergoing treatment for cancer. Pant didn’t want to talk about it in front of the media.
Before the third Test between India and England at Lord’s, the media asked Pant if he spoke to Akash about his personal issue, after the bowler opened up about it after his best bowling performance at Edgbaston.
I knew about Akash’s problems since the IPL but some things are private. Yes, we talked but it’s best to keep it personal, Pant said on Wednesday.
Akash, the right-arm pacer, had a big role in India’s comeback in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, taking 10 wickets in the match and helping his team win by 336 runs.
Akash told India Test batsman Cheteshwar Pujara that he dedicated the performance to his sister.
I haven’t told anyone this but my sister was diagnosed with cancer two months ago. She will be happy with my playing and this will bring some smiles, Akash said. Every time I held the ball I thought about her. This performance is for her. I want to tell her we are with you.
The series starts today at Lord’s and England have announced their playing XI. Jofra Archer is back to play his first Test since 2021, replacing Josh Tongue.
