After the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) suffered another tough loss against the Punjab Kings (PBKS), their captain Ruturaj Gaikwad stepped up to discuss the issues the team is facing. He pointed out that their struggles on the field have played a major role in their current losing streak, which now stands at four games. During the match, CSK couldn’t quite keep up with a fantastic century from Priyansh Arya, which, along with key wickets from the PBKS bowlers, led to an 18-run defeat for CSK.
Talking to reporters after the game, Gaikwad said it all comes down to their fielding. Looking back at the last four matches, it’s pretty clear that our fielding has let us down, he noted. Those dropped catches are really costing us. We’re letting the same batsmen get 15, 20, or even 30 runs too many because we can’t hold onto the ball.”
When it came to his praise for Priyansh who scored that explosive century, Gaikwad recognized his talent. You have to give credit where it’s due. Priyansh played aggressively, and it worked out for him today. Even though we were able to take some wickets, he kept the pressure on and didn’t let up. If they had only scored 10 or 15 runs less, it could have made a big difference for us. But at the end of the day, our mistakes in the field are what hurt.
On the topic of CSK’s batting, Gaikwad felt there were some good signs despite the loss. Our top-order batting looked promising with Rachin and Devon starting strong, he said. Rachin put up 36 runs and Devon went on to score 69. They had a solid partnership, and then Shivam Dube added to it well. He mentioned how Devon is great at timing the ball so he can be really effective up front.
He also touched briefly on Ravindra Jadeja’s role in the innings. Jaddu’s style is different; we needed to adapt as the game unfolded. We were keeping an eye on Devon’s performance and decided to make a change when necessary. It’s all about enjoying the game, really. I mentioned before the match that we need to have fun while fielding. If players start getting nervous, that’s when mistakes happen. I encourage my teammates to be standouts in the field, to focus on saving runs and aiming for those crucial run-outs.
In the game itself, PBKS won the toss and chose to bat first. They faced a tough situation after falling to 83 for 5 but then Priyansh Arya, alongside Shashank Singh and Marco Jansen, launched a powerful counterattack. Priyansh’s special innings saw him score 103 runs off just 42 balls, while Shashank helped with his 52 runs and Jansen added a quickfire 34. Their partnerships of 71 and 65 runs respectively turned the match in PBKS’s favor, finishing their innings at a solid 219 for 6.
For CSK’s bowling attack, Khaleed Ahmed and Ravichandran Ashwin each took a couple of wickets, while Mukesh Choudhary and Matheesha Pathirana chipped in with one each.
As CSK chased down the target of 220 runs, they started well, with Rachin and Devon putting together a 61-run partnership. Devon’s performance was vital as he went on to score 69 runs. MS Dhoni also made his presence felt with a quick 27 but CSK ultimately ended their innings on 201 for 5, falling short by 18 runs. Lockie Ferguson stood out among the PBKS bowlers, claiming two wickets.
Priyansh Arya’s performance earned him the title of ‘Player of the Match’, and after this game, PBKS is sitting comfortably at fourth place in the standings with three wins and one loss, while CSK finds themselves in a tough spot at ninth with only one win so far.
