Shakib Al Hasan, a name that resonates with every cricket fan in Bangladesh, is currently facing some serious legal troubles. A court in Dhaka has ordered the seizure of his assets due to ongoing fraud charges against him. This all-rounder, who has earned a spot in the hearts of many for his amazing skills, is now in quite a bit of hot water over bounced cheques that amount to more than $300,000.
Shakib has had a remarkable career so far, featuring in 71 Test matches, 247 One Day Internationals (ODIs), and 129 Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is). He’s taken 712 wickets in international cricket, making him a true backbone for Bangladesh cricket. But now, his off-field issues could overshadow all those achievements.
The root of his legal troubles seems to be his past connection with former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who lost her position amid a student-led protest last year. Shakib, who once had a role in Hasina’s political party, is now facing public scrutiny and multiple investigations. Although he hasn’t been formally charged with any crimes related to the political upheaval, the fraud allegations have put him in a tough spot.
Earlier this year, in January 2025, a magistrate court issued an arrest warrant for him after he failed to appear in court. The authorities didn’t waste any time and took swift action by moving to seize his assets, making this legal situation even trickier for him.
Since the political unrest began, Shakib has not returned to Bangladesh. At that time, he was playing in a T20 league in Canada when the turmoil hit back home. His absence has only fueled chatter about what this means for his future in the sport.
To add to his troubles, despite being under contract with the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), Shakib has not received his salary for the last four months of 2024. Reports indicate that he is missing out on around BDT 48 lakh, which translates to roughly $38,400 or about INR 33 lakh before taxes. BCB officials have acknowledged the delay, attributing it primarily to the freezing of his bank accounts, which has clearly compounded his worries during this already difficult time.
