Shreyas Iyer, India’s top hitter, is probably going to be out for a minimum of eight weeks after being injured during the third one-day international against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground and sustaining a ruptured spleen. The injury happened when Iyer made a backward dive to take a brilliant catch of Alex Carey, got his landing wrong, and hurt the area around his lower ribs.
Iyer according to sources after the injury momentarily fainted inside the Indian dressing room. He was then taken straight away to the hospital where he was placed in the ICU.
As per the latest news by RevSportz, physicians conducted an interventional trans-catheter embolisation procedure to stop the bleeding internally. It involves the blockage of the bleeding artery through a small catheter as a medical intervention. It is noteworthy, though, that Iyer is under a band of specialists in Sydney for supervision and the BCCI medical team is watching his progress closely.
The reports have already indicated that the board is providing special arrangements for Iyer’s sister to accompany him during the time of healing by flying her to Sydney.
Shreyas Iyer is probably not going to play for two months due to the injury.
The same reports indicate that Iyer’s healing time is around two months which also puts him at a loss for the upcoming ODI series against South Africa in November-December.
He might also not play in the home ODI series against New Zealand in January 2026 as the BCCI selection committee will not want to hasten his return before next year’s T20 World Cup, which is why his participation is uncertain.
Iyer’s performance in the ODI format last year has been nothing short of spectacular and he has been a major contributor for the Indian cricket team. His non-availability to the team for the South Africa tour will hurt the team a lot in its preparation for the series. In 2025, Iyer has already played 11 ODIs for India, scoring a total of 496 runs at an impressive average of 49.60 and a strike rate of 89.53, which is not bad at all. Hence, it will be really fascinating to know who will be the BCCI’s selection committee to choose as Iyer’s backup.
