India’s new Test captain Shubman Gill and his teammate Sai Sudharsan are likely to miss the second warm-up game in Northampton on June 6. Gill apparently needs to focus on the Gujarat Titans heading into the playoffs. If they reach the final on June 3, it would become a near-impossible task for him to join the national squad two days later. The management has thus decided to grant Gill some time off once the tour starts.
The first Test is all set for June 20 at Headingley, representing a fresh start for the side with Gill at the helm since the retirements of major names like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Ravichandran Ashwin. Gill had a fantastic IPL season, scoring 600-plus runs, and has been outstanding along with Sudharsan, who is also in the Test squad and is eyeing the orange cap.
In a video shared by the BCCI, Gill said he feels grateful about the captaincy, marking it as a big responsibility. He believes the leadership should lead by example as well as giving his players some space to learn. He mentioned how depping into English conditions in red-ball format shall be an important one.

The pair were supposed to miss the first India A four-day game against the Lions beginning May 30. India A will have ex-player Hrishikesh Kanitkar as the chief coach, with Ryan ten Doeschate and Troy Cooley assisting in batting and bowling, respectively. Gill said a good leader understands when he has to step in and when to let players do their thing because “everyone has a different background and personality.”
