Rohit Sharma has retired from Test cricket less than a year after hanging up his T20I boots. His exit from T20s caused a stir as he led India to the World Cup in the Americas last year, but the exit from Tests was rather soft. He will continue to be available for ODIs and hopes to stay in the Indian side for some time.
Rohit has four ICC titles to his name-two T20 World Cups (2007, 2024) and two Champions Trophies (2013, 2025)-two of which he won as captain. Though the Test retirement means he will not be able to fulfill the dream of winning the World Test Championship, it does not take away from his desire to win that ODI World Cup.
Rohit missed the 2011 ODI World Cup triumph with India and almost made it this time in 2023 as well, when he took India to the final and suffered a heartbreaking defeat against Australia. At 38, he is excited about joining India for the 2027 ODI World Cup, scheduled to be held in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia, and plans to wrap up his career afterward.
According to his childhood coach Siddesh Lad, Rohit’s utmost goal is to win the 2027 ODI World Cup before retiring. He informed that while Rohit did not qualify for the World Test Championship, he is now eyeing the next ODI World Cup. He also remarked that Rohit had the next generation in mind when making the decision, especially after last year’s T20 World Cup.
The Lad said in an account of other major moments, “Rohit’s 177 on his debut Test against West Indies at Kolkata. That was his first Test hundred and really felt like the player had made his mark. I think that innings is my favorite of his.”
