Steve Smith wants to be part of 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Steve Smith, the Australian batter, has expressed his desire to play T20 games for Australia at the Olympics.
In an interview with 7Cricket, Smith, who will be 39 then, said he wants to play for Australia in T20s at the Olympics. My goal is to try and play at the Olympics, he said.
This shows Smith still has a lot of ambition in T20 cricket. Though he is a great Test batter and his spot in the T20 team isn’t guaranteed, he wants to play.
Lot of pedigree but no place in the set-up
Smith first played T20 International cricket for Australia in 2010. Since then he has played 67 games, scoring 1,094 runs at 125.45. He is also successful in domestic T20 leagues, 5,806 runs from 258 games at 129.97. He has four centuries in the T20 format.
It’s not certain if Smith will be in the Australian T20I team as Australia has a lot of big hitters. Smith hasn’t played an IPL game in four years and hasn’t had many chances in the short format recently.
But he believes he can make a comeback, especially after scoring three centuries in his last eight BBL games for the Sydney Sixers. I get some chances to play in different tournaments and keep trying my best, Smith said.

The Hundred a Comeback key for the veteran
This season Smith will play for Welsh Fire in The Hundred. He was signed after the top men’s players got a pay increase from £125,000 to £200,000. The new owner of Welsh Fire, Sanjay Govil, knows Smith from last year’s Major League Cricket where he was part of Washington Freedom with Ricky Ponting as the coach
This could be a good chance for Smith to get back in Australian T20 setup. His last game in this format was in February 2024 where he scored 4 of 3 balls
Cummins also shares same ambition
Smith isn’t the only Australian player who wants to play in the Olympics. Test captain Pat Cummins has also said before that he wants to be in Los Angeles.The 2028 Los Angeles Olympics will be the second time cricket has been in the Games, 128 years after the first time in 1900. Smith’s enthusiasm matches the sport’s growing global popularity, especially the T20 format.
This could be a chance for cricket to reach a new audience and for players like Smith and Cummins to showcase the sport on the global stage. Their involvement could get more people to watch and play cricket and cement its place in the sports world.
