Cricket is making a comeback to the Olympics after a long break of 128 years, and it’s going to be pretty exciting. That’s right! When the 2028 Los Angeles Games roll around, six teams will be competing for the top spot. The news was shared by the event organizers on Wednesday.
You might be surprised to learn that cricket last appeared at the Olympics way back in 1900 during the Paris Games. Back then, it was a single two-day match between Great Britain and France, and it’s now known as an unofficial Test. It’s wild to think about how much the sport has changed since then!
At the LA 2028 Olympics, the cricket action will be in the T20 format, which is fast and thrilling. Both the men’s and women’s tournaments will feature six teams each. Each team will be able to bring along a squad of 15 players, which means there’s a good number of athletes getting a chance to shine. With a total of 90 spots allocated for each gender, that makes for a lively competition.
In terms of the teams, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has 12 full members, which include countries like Afghanistan, Australia, England, India, and South Africa, among others. There are also 94 associate members from other nations eager to showcase their talent.
As for how teams will qualify for the 2028 Games, we still don’t have all the details. But since the USA will be hosting, they’re likely to get an automatic spot. So, that means only five more teams will get the chance to qualify, making the stakes even higher.
