The previous captain of Bangladesh, Tamim Iqbal has made the decision not to participate in the next Bangladesh Premier League (BPL). He has made a formal request to the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) to remove his name from the players’ draft list, which is going to take place on November 23. Tamim verified his choice on Sunday, November 16.
This is a significant shift for the sport as Tamim had been present during every BPL season that started in 2012. By his hard work, he turned into one of the most reliable and productive batters during the tournament.

Moreover, he was instrumental in Fortune Barishal’s victory in two consecutive championships and strong performances both as captain and an opener. The franchise and the league will feel his absence greatly.

“Yes (I am not taking part in BPL) as I have requested Shahriar Nafees (BCB cricket operation manager) to remove my name from the players’ draft,” Tamim said as quoted by Cricbuzz
It should be emphasized that the withdrawal of Tamim is not a huge surprise. The fact that Fortune Barishal announced themselves that they were not going to participate in this season’s BPL, citing lack of time for proper preparation, is one of the reasons. Without his team in the tournament, the star player had no reason to sign up with another franchise.
Another reason is his health issue. The cricketer, aged 36, has been out of cricket since March 2024, when he experienced a heart attack during a domestic match. After the incident, he chose to concentrate on his healing process rather than doing the opposite of being at the field.
BPL has witnessed the transformation of Tamim into seven different players in its long history. He has 3,835 runs to his name, accumulated over 117 innings with the help of two centuries and 32 fifties, and thus, he is one of the top performers in the league’s history. The last time he was seen in the spotlight was during the 2024–25 BPL season where he finished off with an outstanding 413 runs.
