This is the first time Guwahati is hosting the ICC Women’s World Cup, starting on September 30 with India vs Sri Lanka. ICC and BCCI are organizing the opening ceremony. With the recent loss of Assam’s musical icon, Zubeen Garg, Assam Cricket Association, along with BCCI, will have a tribute at the opening ceremony, Saikia said.
The 40-minute tribute will be on Zubeen Garg. Shreya Ghoshal will be there too. Before the match we will have the Zubeen Garg tribute and Shreya Ghoshal will sing during the mid-innings break. She will sing 4-5 of her biggest hits and the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025 theme song.

Saikia hopes the Women in Blue can break their jinx and finally win their first ICC title as they get ready for the ICC Women’s World Cup which starts on September 30. He said Assam’s cricket team along with the Indian cricket board is planning an opening ceremony in Guwahati before the World Cup opener between India and Sri Lanka.
Saikia wished the Indian women’s team and praised how well they have played against Australia at home and England away. India won both the T20I and ODI series against England in England but lost the three-match ODI series against Australia by a whisker, missing out in the final match after tying the series. Looking back at India’s recent games, BCCI secretary said, It was a very close series that ended yesterday, Australia won 2-1. India played well and almost chased 412 but didn’t quite make it. In one game India won by 102 runs and in another India lost by 8 wickets. So India and Australia are evenly matched and Australia is one of the best team in women’s cricket and India is closing in. Saikia told reporters on Sunday as he filed his nomination at the BCCI headquarters.
India has not won any ICC Women’s Trophy yet so this is a great opportunity for them to do well. With matches in India and Sri Lanka everyone is supporting our Indian team. They have been playing well lately, even beating England in both T20Is and ODIs in England. That’s a big deal for the team. Indian women’s cricket has grown up and I am sure they will play well in the upcoming World Cup. I hope they break the jinx this time, he said.
