On May 6, Sri Lanka Cricket hired R. Sridhar, former fielding coach of India, to develop the fielding skills of players in Sri Lanka. According to Sri Lanka Cricket, Sridhar will take charge of a 10-day training camp from May 7. The camp will focus not only on the men’s national team but also on the women’s team, under-19 team, women’s ‘A’ team, emerging players and top club players.
Sridhar would first train the Sri Lankan men’s team and then move on to the next teams. He will work on various fielding drills, skill training, and task training sessions loosely based on actual match situations. Sridhar is a BCCI Level 3 Coach and was Fielding Coach of India from 2014 to 2021, involved in over 300 international matches; he has also worked with India’s under-19 team and coached Punjab Kings in the IPL.
This initiative would especially see upliftment of fielding standards in Sri Lankan cricket, particularly in the women’s game. Recently, the women’s team, under Chamari Athapaththu, recorded a win against India in the 4th match of the Tri-Series in Colombo, defeating Harmanpreet Kaur’s side by 3 wickets on Sunday.
