The Big Bash League (BBL) has been remarkable in delivering some of the most electrifying cricket matches in the recent past. One of the main reasons for such thrill is the world-class bowlers who are a great part of the tournament and have taken wickets regularly.
It is a general perception that the T20 format is all about the outstanding batting performance, but at the same time, there are some instances where the ball rules and the best of the batsmen are made to dance on their toes.
The Big Bash has been a place where some of the finest fast bowlers have been produced, especially in white ball cricket, who have been the batsman’s worst nightmare.
We will be Discussing Now the Most Prolific Wicket-taker in the Big Bash league’s History
5. Jason Behrendorff (123 Wickets)
Since his debut in 2012, Jason Behrendorff has been the most notable bowler in the Big Bash League (BBL). By 2024, he has participated in 97 matches and played in 95 innings. He has gone on to bowl for 346 overs (2,076 balls), giving away 2,408 runs, and taking 123 wickets throughout his career. The best of his bowling stats is 4/22, pointing to his nice work with the ball.
Behrendorff has a remarkable bowling average of 19.57, an economy rate of 6.95, and a strike rate of 16.87. He has also had 2 four-wicket hauls in his career. While playing for the Perth Scorchers (PS), Behrendorff has been a great player of their bowling unit, recognized for his precision and ability to swing the ball.
4. Ben Dwarshuis (134 Wickets)
Ben Dwarshuis has been a game-changer in the Big Bash League since he first arrived in 2014. Come the end of 2024, he’d already played in a whopping 106 matches – which works out at 104 innings. He’d chucked in 370 1/2 overs and had to face the music for 2,225 balls; plus, the opposition had managed to wriggle free for 2,972 runs – but in return he’d got 134 wickets. He’s at his absolute best when he manages to grab a minimum of five wickets and the best display he’s had was when he knocked over 5 wickets for 21 runs.
His stats tell a story too: with a bowling average of 22.17, an economy rate of 8.01 and a strike rate of 16.60 he’s one of the most reliable bowlers you’ll find in the league. And its not like Dwarshuis has just been a bench warmer – among his best efforts, he has 2 four-wicket hauls and 2 five-wicket hauls to show for it. And of course, throughout it all, Sydney Sixers have had him on their books and those guys have come to know him as a bowler you can rely on.

3. Kane Richardson (135 Wickets)
Kane Richardson has been a key figure in the Big Bash since 2011, when he first made an appearance. By the end of 2024 he’d racked up a total of 109 matches – and in each and every one of them he’d laced up his bowling shoes and given it his best shot – 106 innings isn’t a bad return either. He’d managed to chuck 390 1/2 overs through, and had to put up with being hit for 3,056 runs – however, the upshot was that he’d grabbed 135 wickets and the most impressive of these was when he knocked over 4 wickets for 22 runs, which told you that the bloke was more than capable of landing a killer blow.
Throughout his career, Richardson’s batting – I mean bowling average has been around 22.63; his economy rate sits at around 7.81 and his strike rate is a tidy 17.37 – and he’s got a nice haul of 5 four-wicket performances on his CV, too. Richardson has been a man for all franchises – he’s been with Adelaide Strikers and Melbourne Renegades – and if there’s one thing you can say about him, it’s that he’s been as reliable as they come.
2. Andrew Tye (156 Wickets)
Andrew Tye, the dependable mainstay of the BBL with his skilled bowling, has been giving it his all ever since he stepped onto the scene back in 2014. He’s well on his way to being one of the all-time greats in BBL history – currently 2nd on the list of highest wicket-takers. By now he has played a total of 112 games and has had a hand in 109 innings, up until 2024. In that time he has clocked up 393 overs worth of work – that’s an equivalent of 2,358 balls – giving opponents 3,083 runs to worry about while racking up a very respectable 156 wickets. One particularly impressive day for Tye saw him take 5 wickets for just 23 runs in a standout performance.
As impressive as his tally of wickets is, so too is his bowling average – a very creditable 19.76, with an economy rate of 7.84 and an astonishing strike rate of 15.11. He’s also chipped in with 6 four-wicket hauls and a five-wicket haul to boot. It’s no surprise really that he’s been a mainstay of the league over the years, turning out for teams like the Perth Scorchers (he’s familiarly known as the PS) and the Sydney Thunder (ST).
1. Sean Abbott (165 Wickets)
Sean Abbott is a very good claim to be the BBL’s top wicket-taker – with a total of 165 wickets taken across 118 games between 2011 and 2024 under his belt. Put another way, he’s bowled 396 overs with some amazing numbers to show for it, including a best effort of 5 wickets for just 16 runs – a great average of 20.12, an economy rate of 8.38 and an astoundingly quick strike rate of 14.40. Throughout his BBL career he has claimed 4 four-wicket hauls and one five-wicket haul, which isn’t bad – and he’s been good enough to represent the likes of the Sydney Sixers (they’re known as SS) and Sydney Thunder (ST).
