The ICC released their weekly rankings on Wednesday, July 16. Joe Root is back at number one for Test batters after a century at Lord’s. Some Indian players have dropped in the rankings.
Virat Kohli is trending online because his T20I rating has gone up from 897 to 909. Fans are surprised because he retired from T20I’s on June 29, 2024. He hasn’t played a T20I in over a year so people are wondering how his rating can change.
Virat’s rating increase makes him the first player to have a rating above 900 in all formats. There’s no mistake in the system and his recent play didn’t cause this change.
The right hander from Delhi has played 125 T20Is, scored 4188 runs at 48.69 with a strike rate of 137.04. 123 Tests, 9230 runs at 46.35 with 30 centuries. Still playing ODIs, he has over 14000 runs in that format with 51 hundreds.
In Tests – 937 points.

The ICC updates its records by looking back at old match data and recalculating rating points. This happens when the ICC changes how they rank players, fixes errors in scorecards or creates new ranking rules. This must have happened recently.
This happens all the time. Other players have seen their best ratings go up or down too. But Virat’s change was big news because he’s the first player to have a rating above 900 in all formats. That’s why the ICC’s update is getting so much attention.
