Chennai Super Kings knocked out of IPL 2025 on Wednesday after losing eight out of their ten matches. As reported by former India cricketer Wasim Jaffer, Gujarat wicketkeeper-batter Urvil Patel has been called in for mid-season trials. This action at the time of a poor season spells possible future plans for CSK.
Jaffer said on the pages of ESPNCricinfo that he heard CSK has called Urvil in for trials because he had a couple of good performances in the Mushtaq Ali Trophy. He was surprised that he was not picked by any other team,; even Ayush Mhatre came ahead of him . Mhatre was signed as a replacement for Ruturaj Gaikwad after trying out during the season.
After losing to Punjab Kings, it was official that Chennai was out of running for playoffs: they lost their last match probably for this reason. Along with a well-crafted late four-wicket haul that included a hat-trick, Yuzvendra Chahal managed to show up for the match by bowling out Chennai for 190. They managed to chase down the target, winning by four wickets thus fitting in the second place with 13 points while CSK holds the last spot with just four points left.
In another close moment in the match, Prabhsimran Singh almost edged one trying a reverse sweep off Ravindra Jadeja. But the umpire ruled him not out despite CSK requesting DRS. Given that MS Dhoni is behind the stumps, it’s not often they get those calls wrong. Also, CSK has other wicketkeeper-batters in Vansh Bedi and Devon Conway, making it odd to bring in Urvil for a similar spot.
