Yograj Singh, father of Yuvraj Singh, spoke to his son after India’s win in the first Test at Edgbaston and asked about Shubman Gill’s batting performance.
Gill put pressure on England in the second match of the series. Indian batters took over the game and ended their losing streak at Edgbaston. The Indian captain impressed everyone with his batting in both innings.
Yograj said he called Yuvraj, who is Gill’s mentor, after India’s 336-run win and congratulated him on Gill’s performance. According to Yograj, Yuvraj told him Gill has worked hard to improve his skills and technique and he only provided support.
Yograj told ANI, I called him yesterday and I congratulated him. He said, No, he has also worked hard. If there was another coach, he would have taken the credit. But he didn’t do that. He said Shubman has worked hard. I am just the support system.
Gill took responsibility of increasing India’s score, especially after the team’s batting collapse in Leeds. He batted well as captain and scored 269(387) in his first innings and 161(162) in his second innings against England’s inexperienced bowlers with a strike rate of almost 100.
After India tied the series 1-1, Gill spoke about the changes he made to his technique. He told reporters at the press conference, There were some things that I started working on… The way people see technique changes after every series, after every match. As a team or as a player we don’t focus much on what people are saying.

With 430 runs in both innings, Gill has the second-highest number of runs in a single Test, after England’s Graham Gooch who scored 456 runs with scores of 333 and 123 against India at Lord’s in 1990.
He added, It changes every match. The important thing is that whenever you are going to a match, what your team thinks about you, what your players think about you, if your teammates think about you, if they have confidence in you, then that is more important for me, rather than what people outside are thinking about me or what they think about my technique.3rd Test tomorrow.
