On October 29, 2024, Matthew Wade announced his retirement from international cricket. The wicketkeeper-batter will now take up a coaching role with the Australian team.
Wade was the last part of Australia’s squad in the 2024 T20 World Cup played in the West Indies. Australia later toured England for the white-ball series in September, and Wade wasn’t selected in the touring party. This made it obvious the end of the international career of Wade in Australian colours.
Earlier this year, the left-hander had retired from first-class cricket, turning up for Tasmania one last time in the Sheffield Shield. Even though Wade has retired from the international arena, he will continue to feature in the BBL and a few other T20 leagues.
While speaking about this retirement, Wade said, “I was fully aware my international days were most likely over at the end of the last T20 World Cup. My international retirement and coaching has been a constant conversation with George (Bailey) and Andrew (McDonald) over the past six months.”
Wade further thanked his Australia teammates, support staff, coaches, and family members for supporting him to pursue his dreams.
