The Ninth edition of the Champions Trophy is upon us as less than a month is left in the start of the tournament. Talking about the tournament’s history, the first edition was played in 1998. ICC maintained a two-year cycle for the tournament till 2006. Notably, the 2008 edition in Pakistan was cancelled as five teams decided to not participate in the tournament due to security concerns.
The 2008 edition was shifted to South Africa and was played in 2009. Before this, the T20 World Cup was inaugurated and it was decided that this tournament would be played in a two-year cycle. This led to ICC deciding a four-year cycle for Champions Trophy. After the 2009 edition, the next editions were played in 2013 and 17. Eight years back, the tournament was discontinued to make way for the World Test Championship.
