Afghanistan’s rise in world cricket has been phenomenal. They have overcome lots of odds to challenge their mighty opponents.
And it’s pretty evident from their recent performance, including against Australia. Afghanistan were almost on the fringes of beating the six-time world champions in the 2023 World Cup but fell short in their efforts.
And as both teams continue to meet in global events, one can dream of Afghanistan giving Australia a run for their money.
Having said that, here’s the head-to-head record between Afghanistan and Australia in ODI cricket.

And their first victory came in 2012, when both sides faced each other for the first time. Sharjah hosted a one-off ODI, which Australia won by three wickets.

The other two neutral encounters have come in England and India in the 2019 and 2023 ODI World Cups, which Australia won. And both teams played each other in the 2015 World Cup in Perth, with Australia registering a thumping win by 275 runs.

In the most recent match between both sides, Afghanistan came pretty close to pulling off a win against Australia.
It was the 2023 World Cup encounter in Mumbai, where they had Australia seven down on the score of 91 while defending 292. But Glenn Maxwell’s excellent fightback took the Aussies over the ropes.
Before that, Afghanistan weren’t a challenge to Australia in their first three matches. The Aussies breezed past the Afghans with a lot of ease.
