India clinched the Champions Trophy 2025 by beating New Zealand in the final in Dubai on Sunday, March 9, shattering their twain long years of wait for an ODI title. Rohit Sharma knocked 76 from 83 balls as the Men in Blue chased the 252-run target with six wickets remaining.
During their title run into the Champions Trophy, India created a few records. They became the with their third whooping Champions Trophy title against New Zealand this time in Dubai.
As such, now India has become the only third team ever to bag back-to-back ICC titles under men’s cricket. They had won the T20 World Cup 2024 after an extraordinary game with South Africa in the final match. Eight months later, the Champions Trophy is now added to their glory after winning the 20-over World Cup in ICC events.
Such a rare accomplishment is just shared by India, West Indies, and Australia. The West Indies won this status when the team won two successive ICC trophies when it attained the ODI World Cup in 1975 and 1979. The Australians have made such a feat twice. They enjoyed the Champions Trophy in 2006 and then won the ODI World Cup in 2007, just as they have repeated the same pattern by winning the WTC 2023 final and the ODI World Cup 2023.
India chased down a competitive score of 252 against the Kiwis in Dubai to win the match four wickets in hand. The Men in Blue have now become the most successful team in the competition after winning the Champions Trophy for the third time in its history, including the one shared with Sri Lanka in 2002.
India captain Rohit Sharma turned Player of the Match in the final for his blazing 76 from 83 balls. The start that he brought in would, in effect, help ease India somewhat even when the Kiwis were still alive in the game.
Speaking on his future, Rohit also quashed all rumors against his retirement. “I’m not going to retire from this format just to make sure that no rumors are spread going forward,” said Rohit at the press conference post the final.
