On Monday, the Mumbai Indians, led by Hardik Pandya, made a bit of history by becoming the first team in the Indian Premier League to rack up the most wins against one opponent at a specific venue. They marked their 10th victory over the Kolkata Knight Riders at the Wankhede Stadium. This win put them ahead of KKR, who had previously notched up nine wins against the Punjab Kings at Eden Gardens.
Now, Kolkata has a chance to level that record when they face the Punjab Kings at home on Saturday, April 26. The Mumbai Indians aren’t just sitting pretty with their victories over Kolkata; they also have eight wins each over the Royal Challengers Bangalore at both the Wankhede and M Chinnaswamy Stadiums. While the Chennai Super Kings have also beaten Bangalore eight times at home, they couldn’t match Kolkata’s record against Punjab after losing to them by 50 runs just last week.
With this latest win, Mumbai has now tallied 24 victories against Kolkata, which helps them maintain their status as having the most wins against any franchise in IPL history. Not too far behind, both Chennai and Kolkata have each won 21 games against Bengaluru and Punjab. On top of that, Kolkata has put together 20 wins over RCB, and they have a chance to match their record against PBKS when they play Bengaluru again on May 17.
A big shout out goes to Ashwani Kumar, who made an impressive debut in the IPL with a record four wickets. Alongside him, Ryan Rickelton scored an unbeaten 62, leading Mumbai to an easy eight-wicket victory over Kolkata. The 23-year-old bowler from Jhanjeri, Punjab, made history by being the first Indian to take four wickets on his IPL debut, finishing his spell with figures of 4 wickets for just 24 runs while ripping through Kolkata’s batting.
Even though Rohit Sharma had another rough game, Rickelton stepped up and made a mark in the tournament. The bowling attack, which included Deepak Chahar, Trent Boult, and, of course, Pandya, really showed their strength; Kolkata fell apart, ending with the lowest total in IPL 2025 at just 116, bowled out by the 17th over.
