Punjab Kings’ allrounder had a pretty average performance with the bat in the current IPL 2025 season, even though the team still managed to snag another win. On Tuesday night against the Chennai Super Kings, Maxwell only managed to score 1 run off 2 balls before getting out, thanks to a delivery from Ravichandran Ashwin. After the game, he faced some consequences for his actions on the field and was fined 25% of his match fees for not following the IPL’s code of conduct. On top of that, a demerit point was added to his record.
The BCCI made a statement about the situation late Tuesday, mentioning that Maxwell accepted the charges for what they classified as a Level 1 offense. This falls under article 2.2 of the IPL Code of Conduct, which deals with how players are expected to conduct themselves during matches.
So, why did Maxwell get penalized?
Basically, he did something that was against the rules outlined in article 2.2, which covers actions that are outside the normal flow of the game. This means if a player, in frustration, starts hitting or kicking things like the stumps or advertising boards, they can be held accountable. The BCCI’s guidelines even specify that if a player’s actions, regardless of intent, cause damage to anything on the field—like advertising boards or the dressing room area—it’s considered an offense.
Even though Maxwell didn’t make a big contribution with his batting, he’s still making a splash with his spin bowling. He managed to take out CSK’s opener, Rachin Ravindra, who had gotten off to a decent start with 36 runs off 23 balls, including six boundaries.
Batting first, Punjab Kings posted a huge score of 219 runs for 6 wickets. This was largely thanks to an incredible century from Priyansh Arya, who came out of nowhere to score 103 runs off just 42 balls, smashing 7 fours and 9 sixes. It was quite a show, especially since the top order struggled a bit, with four of their batsmen getting out with single-digit scores.
Shashank Singh also helped out with a quick half-century, making 52 not out off 36 balls, and Marco Jansen added 34 runs from just 19 balls to boost the team’s total. In response, CSK managed to score 201 runs for 5 wickets but fell short of the Punjab Kings’ total.
