Heinrich Klaasen, the wicket-keeper-batsman of South Africa, said on Monday that he is taking a voluntary retirement from international cricket, effective immediately. He had chosen social media to announce it: “It is a sad day for me as I announce that I have decided to step away from international cricket.”
Klaasen explained that this wasn’t really an easy decision to make. He said, “It took me a long time to decide what’s best for me and my family for the future.” The other main reason behind this decision was to give his family some quality time. In his Instagram post, Klaasen expressed his excitement for this stage of his journey, stating, “I look forward to spending more time with my family as this decision will allow me to do so.”
The announcement does come as a big surprise to fans of South African cricket, especially with the timing. Earlier in the day, hailing from Australia, batter Glenn Maxwell too had announced his retirement from ODI cricket.
Klaasen has done wonders in the world of cricket, having represented the Sunrisers Hyderabad in the recently concluded 2025 Indian Premier League. He’s an aggressive batsman by nature and has played 122 international games for South Africa; that includes four Test matches, 60 ODIs, and 58 T20Is.
