According to Ricky Ponting, the former Australian captain and cricket legend, B Sai Sudharsan should be given a shot for the upcoming Test series against England. India, under Shubman Gill’s leadership, prepares for five Tests with the first starting at Headingley, Leeds on June 20. Sudharsan is having his maiden Test call-up for the tour. With Rohit Sharma getting retired, the nation is looking for another opening partner for Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Ponting feels Sudharsan might be the man.
“I think it’s the right time for Sudharsan to come into the team. There’s going to be some changes with Rohit and Virat not around,” said Ponting. He felt that if Sudharsan is drafted in at the opening spot, then the more experienced players can play in the middle order, where they would actually benefit the team when it faces some hard English bowling attacks in testing conditions.
He added that if Jaiswal opens with Sudharsan, India will require a great deal of experience sitting at number three. That could be KL Rahul or Nair, and then Shubman would bat fourth. When the new guys feel comfortable, they can move up the order as well.

On the other hand, Rahul made a statement of intent in the second unofficial Test against the England Lions, scoring a magnificent century when asked to open the batting. With Jaiswal and Gill likely to fill the first two spots, and India on the cusp trying to fit both Rahul and Karun Nair in, it seems Sudharsan might yet have a very tough road before him for making his Test debut at Headingley.
