After getting Australia back in the game on Day 1 of the ICC World Test Championship final against South Africa at Lord’s, Steve Smith talked about his dismissal and what’s to come. Smith scored 66 off 112 balls, which was a big help in getting Australia from 67/4 to 212 in their first innings.
After the game, he joked about the mistake that got him out. Don’t nick the part-time off-spinner. Down the slope. I’m still trying to work out how I managed that. But yeah, don’t do that, Smith said about getting out to part-time spinner Aiden Markram.
Known for his patient batting and ability to adapt, Smith partnered with all-rounder Beau Webster for a key 79-run stand that got Australia back on track when South Africa had the upper hand. He hit 10 boundaries and was very focused, especially under pressure.
Talking about the pitch and how things might change as the game goes on, Smith said, Just play what’s in front of us. It might spin more as the game goes on. It’s pretty dry. I don’t know, the seam might go down too. The bounce might be a bit uneven throughout the game, as we’ve seen already on day one.

Looking to Day 2, Smith said a good start with the ball is key. Hopefully we can get a few early wickets in the morning and be on top. That’s the ideal situation for us right now.
Australia finished the day well, having pushed South Africa to 43/4 at stumps. With Smith’s innings and some early wickets, this game is set up nicely for Day 2.
