Sourav Ganguly feels Shubman Gill is in a good phase as India’s Test captain right now, but he expects things to get tougher.
Ganguly, who turned 53 today, spoke to PTI, “Indian cricket will always have good players.
Gill has 585 runs and needs 18 more to beat Rahul Dravid’s 2002 record of 602 runs, the most runs by an Indian batsman in a series in England. India came back strong to win the Edgbaston Test by 336 runs and the series is now 1-1.
Ganguly said at Eden Gardens during his birthday party, “This is the best I’ve seen him bat and it doesn’t surprise me.
“I told the PTI CEO that Indian cricket will always have players after each generation. When there’s a gap, players will come and take their place.
“Indian cricket has so much talent. You’ll find players in every group. After Gavaskar, Kapil Dev, Tendulkar, Dravid, Kumble, Kohli, then Gill, Jaiswal, Akash Deep, Mukesh, Siraj… there are so many good players.
“In every generation, when there’s a need, they’ll step up. I’ve always said that.
Ganguly said he will coach India at some point but he knows things can change. “It’s early to say. People can want things but things are not that simple. Do you want to coach? We’ll see, who knows.
Why Sourav Ganguly Thinks Shubman Gill Is in a ‘Honeymoon Period’?
Gill, leading India for the first time, has scored three hundreds (one being a double century) in two matches. He has 585 runs, average 146.25. His 269 and 161 in Birmingham broke records, the highest match total by an Indian batsman. With three Tests left, Gill can break more records, like Don Bradman’s 88-year-old record for most runs as captain in a Test series. Bradman scored 810 runs in five Tests in the 1936-37 Ashes, average 90 with three hundreds. Gill needs 225 runs to beat that.“Wow. I hope his career goes well. I think he’s a middle order batsman. He’s just become captain so it’s a good time for him. Soon there will be more pressure. The next three Tests will be tough.

Despite the big win, Ganguly warned India to start afresh at Lord’s. “It’s 1-1. There’s still a lot to play for, three matches left. India has played well and they’ve been good. They might have lost at Headingley but they played well. In the next match at Lord’s they have to start from scratch.
