Shubman Gill’s good show as Test captain has fans wondering if he can also lead India in ODIs. Some journalists even posted that the 25-year-old can replace Rohit Sharma. This has been a hot topic on X (previously Twitter) and Instagram since Thursday, July 10.
Sports Tak says Gill will be India’s captain at 2027 World Cup, sometime soon. But it’s not clear when Rohit will step down. Other reports say Gill will lead India in their next ODI series, which is scheduled in October in Australia with 3 matches.
This talk started in December 2024 when Rohit took himself out of 5th Test of Border-Gavaskar Trophy. That was his last act as India’s Test captain.
He then led the team to 2025 Champions Trophy and wanted to play ODIs and Tests for India. Note that he quit T20Is after winning 2024 T20 World Cup. But before the squad for England Tests was announced, reports said BCCI selectors had decided to remove Rohit from Test captaincy. Shortly after, the senior player announced his retirement from the format.
It’s said that the Mumbai player is trying to stay in shape for 2027 World Cup in South Africa, hoping to make up for 2023 edition where India lost in the final in Ahmedabad. His long time teammate, Virat Kohli, who also retired from Tests and T20Is, has said he wants the same.

Their return to international cricket has been pushed back as India’s tour of Bangladesh in August has been cancelled. There are talks that BCCI might arrange a tour of Sri Lanka instead but nothing is confirmed.
Gill made a name for himself in ODIs before Tests, scoring lots of runs in 2023 and 2024 as an opener. His captaincy in England has been impressive, smart tactics and good communication with his teammates. Another player often mentioned for ODI captaincy is Shreyas Iyer, who is set at number 4 and is considered a good white ball captain because of his IPL success.
